主讲人简介:
Professor Youngmin Kim is a Distinguished Research Professor of Dongguk University, Director of Trans-Media World Literature Institute of Dongguk University. He was Visiting Professor at many universities. He had served as President of the William Butler Yeats Society of Korea and Society of Jacques Lacan & Contemporary Psychoanalysis of Korea, President of English Language and Literature Association of Korea, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of English Language and Literature, Vice-President of Ethical Literary Criticism (IATIS), and Vice-Chair of International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures (IASIL). He is now President of Deans’ Association of the Humanities Colleges of the Republic of Korea.
In his 2009-2011 2-year NRF-Endowed Project, “Transnatioalism and Cultural Translation,” he has attempted to investigate the nature of the concepts of transnationalism in the fields of sociology, history, politics, and literature, in a word, the humanities, based upon this genealogy of emerging transnational cultural logic, and to demonstrate how 21st-century cultural phenomena around the world transform themselves into the cultural logic of transnationalism in connection with his hybrid cultural identities, diasporic life-styles, and cross-national commodification of cultural products, and flexible citizenship. His new 3-year project (2017-2020) of “Trans Media, World Literature, and the Digital Humanities” is a continuing effort to enhance the transnational and translational spirit of the liminality, this time by searching for the method of materializing/articulating/visualizing the interface between new media and world literature in the context of the digital humanities and postmodern sublime.
As one of the advisory committee of the Harvard University Institute of World Literature (IWL), he has been participating for the past 4 years (2013-2016) the IWL Summer School at Hong Kong City University, Lisbon University, and Harvard University. He held an international conference on “Digital Humanities and World Literature” as the conference organizer at his Dongguk University in 2017. He wrote books and articles on Modern and Contemporary Poetry, Critical Theory, Cultural Studies, Lacanian Psychoanalysis, World Literature, and Transnationalism. His current interest is transnationalism and cultural translation, world poetries in English, and interdisciplinary border-crossing humanities, and digital humanities and digital culture.
内容简介:Descartes is the starting point for the discussion of the problematic of the subject, the seemingly unified subject of the cogito ergo sum. The discussion of the subject has been displaced since Descartes into the issue of "The Other" by a number of philosophers and theorists: Kant's conception of the human subject as divided between the world in which we are determined and the world in which we are free; Hegel's dialectical phenomenology of human subject; Rousseau's conception of the human subject as The Other; Husserl's intentionality; Heidegger's phenomenological human subject as Dasein or Being-in-the-world; structural human subject as represented by Levi-Strauss and Saussure; poststructural human subject as represented by Barthes, Foucault, Lacan, and Derrida; and postmodern human subject.
Jacques Lacan's topology of the mind, in particular, that of "extimacy," can articulate the way how literature problematizes the opposition between inside and outside in the substance of language itself. In fact, as signifiers always refer not to things, but to other signifiers, signifiers becomes unconscious, and can say more than they actually says. Thus, the original signifiers become unconscious through the process of repression which makes a structure of multiple and polyphonic signifying chains. Postmodern writers use this polyphonic language of the Other at Freudian "Another Scene" (Ein anderer Schauplatz) and Lacanian "Other" (Autre).
The literary language can even manage to put itself in the between-the-two, a strange place, the place of the dream and of the Unheimlichkeit (uncanny), and suture between "the outer skin of the interior" and "the inner skin of the exterior" of the impossible real of definite meaning. The objective goal of the evacuation of meaning is all the same the first aspect suggested by the aims of the experimentalism. The open linguistic fields of the literary language, then, will be supplemented by The Freudian "unconscious" processes of dreams, free associations, slips of tongue, and symptoms which are composed of this polyphonic language. These fields can be properly excavated by the methods and topological mapping of the poetics of extimacy which lurks behind the postmodern representation.
