Research Institute for British and American Literatures

The Research Institute for British and American Literatures, formerly known as the Research Institute for Literature and Translation (since 2008), was founded in June 2016. It is committed to creating an academic platform, building a strong research team, integrating research interests, and fostering a congenial academic atmosphere. Currently, the Institute comprises 20 members, including Professors Li Gongzhao, Cao Shanke, Ma Xian, Chen Maolin, Guan Nanyi, Xu Xiaodong, and Chen Lizhen. In addition to these full professors, Associate Professors Ying Ying, Huang Yi, Zhang Wen, and Jin Jia also hold a Ph.D. in Foreign Literatures. The major research fields pursued by the Institute members include British Literature, American Literature, Canadian Literature, and English Language and Culture. The Institute is co-directed by Professor Chen Maolin and Professor Xu Xiaodong.

Over the years, the Institute has served as a highly active and supportive platform for scholarly exchanges primarily in the form of public lectures. Internationally or nationally renowned scholars who have been invited include Professor J. H. Prynne of the University of Cambridge, Professor Tong Ming of California State University, Professors Wu Yuanmai, Sheng Ning, Lu Jiande, Chen Zhongyi of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Professors Nie Zhenzhao and Wu Di of Zhejiang University, Professor Geng Youzhuang of Renmin University of China, Professor Wang Shouren of Nanjing University, Professors Li Weiping and Yu Jianhua of Shanghai International Studies University, Professor Ou Hong of Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, etc.

In the past five years, the Institute members have had very impressive research outputs, including more than 10 monographs, some 30 research articles published in top Chinese and international journals, and 8 research projects fully supported by the National Social Sciences Fund.
