The Limits of Practical Ethics in The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes

The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes (1765) is a moral and didactic tale written for children that embodies the “practical ethics” of the mid-eighteenth century, understanding ethical relationships in terms of duty and obligation. Whether viewed from the perspective of literacy or sentimentally, Goody Two-Shoes is frequently invoked as an exemplar of mid-century moral children’s fiction. By considering the novel in terms of practical ethics, this study will interrogate the moral choices of characters alongside their ethical relationships with other humans and non-humans. It will also probe the multiple forms of narration that emerge and re-emerge throughout the novel: while each changes the relationship with the reader, one, in particular, demonstrates an attempt to address the reader for commercial purposes. Punctuating the work with intertextual references and marketing ploys, the “bookseller narrator” encourages the (real, historical) reader to purchase further titles published by John Newbery and transgresses the principles of practical ethics.

主讲人简介:

Russell Palmer is an Associate Professor in the College of Foreign Languages and Literature at Fudan University. His research interests focus on the long-term reception of literary works. He is currently working on the reception of Robinson Crusoe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and his second book project, which investigates the literary, cultural, and material histories of the classic English folktale“Children in the Wood.” Since 2016, he has been the Editorial Assistant for ANQ (A&HCI) and he sits on the editorial advisory board of Post-Medieval Archaeology (A&HCI). In 2021, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. His first monograph was published in 2021 and he is author of 12 A&HCI/SSCI publications.
